Education Loan Waiver: Karnataka MLC BS Shivanna Urges PM Modi to Waive Student Debt for Poor Families

Mysuru: Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) BS Shivanna has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to completely waive education loans and accumulated interest for children belonging to economically vulnerable families.

In a formal letter addressed to the Prime Minister, Shivanna highlighted that students from families of farmers, agricultural laborers, daily-wage workers, and other low-income groups pursuing higher education are bearing an overwhelming financial burden.

Rising Financial Distress Among Rural Families

The MLC pointed out that recurring crop failures, low agricultural yields, and persistent unemployment have severely crippled the debt-paying capacity of rural and working-class households. He noted that aggressively dispatched loan recovery notices from financial institutions have further compounded the distress of struggling families.

Call for Full Implementation of Interest Subsidy

Shivanna emphasized existing provisions, stating that students from households with an annual income under ₹4.5 lakh are entitled to an interest subsidy on education loans up to ₹7.5 lakh under Central scheme guidelines.

Urging immediate Central intervention, Shivanna requested PM Modi to ensure that all eligible candidates receive these scheme benefits seamlessly and without discrimination, alongside granting a comprehensive waiver on existing education loan debts.
