Following the Karnataka state government’s decision to officially permit school teachers to use the professional prefix ‘Tr.’, Congress Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) B.S. Shivanna has now demanded similar formal recognition for two other vital professions driving the state’s growth: engineers and lecturers.

In a formal letter addressed to Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, MLC B.S. Shivanna requested the government to extend official authorization for engineers to use the prefix ‘Er.’ and lecturers to use ‘Lr.’ before their names.

Recognition to Elevate Professional Dignity

Welcoming the state’s initial step to honor teachers, MLC Shivanna highlighted that professional titles instill pride and acknowledge crucial societal contributions.

“Honouring teachers with formal professional recognition is a laudable step towards elevating the dignity of the teaching community in our State. In line with this initiative, I request the government to extend similar formal recognition to two other key professions that drive Karnataka’s growth, innovation, and academic standing,” Shivanna stated in his letter.

The Role of Engineers and Lecturers in State Growth

Elaborating on the contributions of these professionals, the Congress legislator emphasized their essential roles in sustaining Karnataka’s infrastructure and higher education sectors.

Engineers (‘Er.’): Play a pivotal role in advancing the state’s technical innovation, economic momentum, and infrastructure development. Official designation as ‘Er.’ would serve as formal recognition for their technical service.

Lecturers (‘Lr.’): Shape higher academic standards, guide research, and mentor future leaders. Authorizing the prefix ‘Lr.’ would formally acknowledge their commitment to higher education.

The proposal by MLC Shivanna has generated widespread discussion across professional circles in Karnataka, with various associations eagerly waiting to see if the government will accept the request
