New Delhi: Indian sports has been plunged into profound grief following the tragic death of Neeraj Yadav, one of the country’s most accomplished para-athletes. The 42-year-old three-time Asian Para Games gold medallist was found dead in Delhi under distressing circumstances on Tuesday night.

According to police and sports fraternity sources, Yadav allegedly died by suicide. Preliminary reports indicate he was found unconscious near his SUV vehicle near the Maujpur area after emergency transport to a nearby hospital, where medical professionals pronounced him dead.

A Storied Career in Para-Athletics

Yadav was a titan in the F55 category, which covers seated field events including the javelin throw, discus throw, and shot put. Diagnosed with post-polio residual paralysis at the age of seven, he defied formidable physical hurdles to carve out a legendary international career.

His crowning achievements on the continental stage cemented his legacy as a pioneer for Indian para-sports:

2018 Jakarta Asian Para Games: Claimed his maiden gold medal in the javelin throw.

2023 Hangzhou Asian Para Games: Delivered a phenomenal double-gold performance, clinching top honors in both the javelin and discus events.

Beyond his competitive exploits, Yadav dedicated his expertise to nurturing grassroots talent, running the Anshneer Sports Academy based in Sonipat, Haryana.

Tragic Turn and Ongoing Investigation

Friends and officials close to the athlete noted that Yadav had been grappling with significant personal and professional stress in recent months. Reports suggest he was deeply affected after missing out on selection for the ongoing Asian Para Games cycle following a doping suspension, alongside personal challenges.

Senior para-athletics officials expressed deep shock over the tragedy. Expressing condolences, national coaches noted that while competitive sports carry immense pressure, the loss of an inspirational role model like Yadav is an irreparable blow to the nation’s sporting ecosystem.

Local law enforcement authorities have initiated a comprehensive inquiry into the sequence of events leading up to his death, with a postmortem examination underway.
