D K Shivakumar Sets Nov 1 Deadline to Surrender Illegal Guns in Karnataka

BENGALURU: In a major push to regulate unlicensed firearms and curb illegal possession, the Karnataka government has announced a strict amnesty scheme across the state.

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced that residents holding unpermitted firearms—particularly those living in regions near forest borders—must surrender their weapons to local authorities by November 1.

The announcement came during a joint media briefing alongside Forest Minister Ramalinga Reddy. The government emphasized that individuals holding unlicensed guns for self-defense or crop protection must turn them in immediately to avoid harsh legal action.

Key Highlights of the Announcement

 Surrender Cutoff: November 1

 Primary Focus: Farmers and residents near forest borders holding unauthorized firearms for crop defense or protection against wild animals.

 Amnesty & Licensing: Citizens who voluntarily hand over unlicensed weapons will be eligible to apply for formal, legal licenses through official channels.

 Strict Enforcement: Uncompromising police action under the Arms Act will begin against anyone caught with illegal weapons after the deadline.

Path to Legal Licenses for Genuine Applicants

Addressing concerns regarding self-defense and wildlife threats in rural zones, D.K. Shivakumar assured residents that the state would process genuine requests through proper legal channels.

“Forest Minister Ramalinga Reddy and I have decided to give an opportunity to people living near forest areas to surrender all their unlicensed weapons. If it’s for their protection, I am giving them time until November 1,” Shivakumar stated.

He added that the state police department and the forest department will execute a coordinated drive:

“I will inform the Director General of Police as well. The two departments will hold a joint meeting. We will definitely provide licenses to those who are eligible. I do not want any unlicensed weapons kept in homes.”
