Bengaluru Traffic Police Relaunches ‘Cop for a Day’ Initiative: How to Register via ASTram App

BANGALORE MAIL NEWS DESK

The Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) has officially brought back its popular ‘Cop for a Day’ initiative, inviting citizens to step into the boots of traffic personnel and experience on-ground traffic management during peak hours firsthand.

Announcing the return of the program on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), the BTP encouraged residents to understand the daily challenges faced by traffic officers and share constructive feedback to help build safer, smoother roads across the city.

Experience, Understand, Participate: How the Program Works

The initiative offers volunteers temporary, hands-on exposure to managing traffic at major bottlenecks and busy intersections across Bengaluru.

“Get a firsthand understanding of the challenges faced by our traffic personnel, share your experiences, and offer valuable suggestions for safer, smoother roads,” the Bengaluru Traffic Police posted on X. “Register through the BTP ASTraM app and be a Cop for a Day! Experience. Understand. Participate. Together, let’s build a safer Bengaluru.”

Selection and Duty Flow:

1. Application: Interested citizens can register directly using the official BTP ASTraM mobile app.

2. Shortlisting: Candidates will be selected after a review of their applications.

3. Orientation & Training: Selected volunteers will receive hands-on training from senior traffic personnel before deployment.

4. On-Field Deployment: Participants will be stationed alongside active traffic officers at designated signals during morning or evening rush hours.

Building Bridges Between Police and Public

According to senior police officials, the main objective of relaunching the initiative is two-fold: educating citizens on traffic discipline while collecting ground-level feedback from the public’s perspective to refine traffic management strategies.

Officers emphasized that bridging the gap between traffic personnel and commuters will lead to better mutual respect, enhanced compliance with road safety rules, and faster resolution of traffic bottlenecks.

Internet Reacts: Calls for Similar Programs in Mumbai and Pune

The initiative has drawn widespread praise across social media platforms, with prominent figures and commuters welcoming the move.

Mohandas Pai, Chairman of Aarin Capital and former CFO of Infosys, praised the initiative while highlighting the need for ongoing behavioral training for officers.

“This is a very good initiative bringing police closer to citizens @blrcitytraffic,” Pai shared on X. He also urged the department to organize programs focused on encouraging polite and helpful public interactions.

Demands from Other Tier-1 Cities: The move caught the attention of commuters in other major metros. Social media users from Mumbai and Pune called on their local traffic departments to replicate the Bengaluru model.

“Launch this in Mumbai and I’ll sign up myself. Stand at one signal for two hours and watch bikes jump red lights—you’ll realize the problem isn’t always the traffic police or roads; sometimes it’s us,” commented one user.
