G S Patil Elected Karnataka Assembly Speaker Amid Opposition Boycott

Congress MLA Gurupadagouda Sanganagouda Patil, popularly known as G S Patil, was elected as the new Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Friday.
The election proceedings took place in the Assembly hall under Pro-tem Speaker T B Jayachandra, who declared Patil elected following a voice vote.
Nomination and Voice Vote
The motion proposing G S Patil for the Speaker’s post was moved by Chief Minister D K Shivakumar and seconded by Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara.
The proceedings were marked by the absence of the main opposition parties. Both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Janata Dal (Secular) [JD(S)] boycotted the election process.
Reason for the Vacancy
The position of the Speaker fell vacant following the resignation of U T Khader, who stepped down from the post ahead of his induction into the state Cabinet under the Shivakumar-led government.
