In a major boost for sports enthusiasts and the city’s nightlife economy, Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has officially announced an extension for Bengaluru restaurant timings, allowing commercial food establishments, hotels, and pubs to stay open until 3:30 AM during the final stages of the FIFA World Cup.

The temporary relaxation will be in effect on July 14, July 15, and July 19. The move shifts the city’s mandatory closing deadline from its standard 1:00 AM limit, allowing football fans to safely gather at commercial hubs for live community screenings of the prestigious international tournament.

NRAI Request Prompts Late-Night Relief from Chief Minister

The decision comes directly in response to a formal representation submitted by the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) to the state government. Because the tournament is being hosted across North America, the stark time-zone differences mean that crucial knockout fixtures cross midnight and kick off late into the night for viewers in India.

Taking to the social media platform X, Chief Minister DK Shivakumar highlighted the cultural and economic importance of the tournament when declaring the relaxation in Bengaluru restaurant timings.

“Football inspires millions across the world, and the FIFA World Cup is a celebration that fans eagerly look forward to,” Shivakumar stated. “Following a request from the National Restaurant Association of India, our government has permitted hotels and restaurants in Bengaluru to extend food service timings from 1:00 AM to 3:30 AM on July 14, 15, and 19 to facilitate late-night match screenings.”

Public Safety and Security Top Priorities for the Government

While the decision has sparked celebration among local trade groups and sports bars, the administration has made it clear that public safety will not be compromised. The state government has invoked specific provisions under Section 31(W) of the Karnataka Police Act, 1963, to legally execute the conditional extension.

Following the directive from the Chief Minister’s office, Bengaluru City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh issued the official executive orders to implement the late-night extensions seamlessly across the Bengaluru City Police Commissionerate jurisdiction.

DK Shivakumar urged citizens to maintain decorum during the late-night broadcasts, adding, “This decision has been taken while ensuring that public safety, law and order, and the convenience of citizens remain our highest priorities. I urge everyone to enjoy the matches responsibly and extend full cooperation to the authorities.”

A Win-Win for Football Fans and Hospitality

The extended operating window perfectly aligns with the high-stakes final matches of the tournament. The temporary orders cover the highly anticipated semifinal blockbusters as well as the grand finale scheduled for Sunday, July 19.

Hospitality industry insiders anticipate a massive surge in footfall and revenue, as community screenings have historically drawn immense crowds in Bengaluru, a city known for its passionate football fan base. Officials have clarified that the relaxation approved by DK Shivakumar is strictly a temporary relief measure restricted to the specified match dates and will not change the permanent operating regulations for commercial nightlife establishments on regular days.
