Shocking Case in Kodagu: US Tourist Allegedly Drugged and Raped at Homestay; Owner and Worker Arrested

Share

Kutta, Kodagu: A disturbing incident has shaken the tourism sector in Karnataka, as a United States national has alleged she was drugged and sexually assaulted at a private homestay in Kutta, Kodagu district.

Following a formal complaint facilitated through the US Embassy, local authorities have arrested two individuals in connection with the crime. The primary accused, identified as Vrujesh Kumar, a worker at the homestay, is alleged to have spiked the victim’s drink before carrying out the assault.

Allegations of Cover-Up

The investigation has taken a serious turn with the arrest of the homestay owner, Vishal Ponnana. Reports indicate that the owner has been taken into custody for allegedly attempting to suppress the incident. According to investigators, the owner disconnected the property’s Wi-Fi services for three days following the assault, intentionally isolating the victim and preventing her from contacting local authorities or the embassy for immediate assistance.

Official Response

Kodagu Superintendent of Police, R.N. Bindu Mani, confirmed the arrest of both the worker and the owner, stating that they have been remanded to judicial custody until May 3.

The Karnataka state government has expressed a zero-tolerance stance regarding the incident. State Home Minister G. Parameshwara assured the public that the government is committed to ensuring a swift and thorough investigation. “We will check whether the homestay has a license and follows standard operating procedures. If violations are found, stringent legal action will be taken,” he stated.

Impact on Tourism

This incident has raised significant concerns regarding the safety of solo travelers and the regulation of the growing homestay sector in Kodagu. Local officials have emphasized that the district remains a premier global destination and that they are working to ensure such events do not damage the region’s reputation or the safety of its visitors.

The investigation is ongoing as police review digital evidence and verify statements from all parties involved.
