Remote Work and Staggered Shifts Suggested to Tackle ORR Traffic Woes

In a fresh bid to ease the daily traffic chaos along Bengaluru’s Outer Ring Road (ORR), authorities are urging tech companies to implement flexible work arrangements and new commute strategies.

At a recent coordination meeting with IT industry representatives, city planners and transport officials recommended a range of solutions aimed at reducing the notorious bottlenecks—especially the heavy rush seen between 9 am and 10 am.

Early Start Times and Midweek WFH Proposals

One of the key suggestions includes staggered office hours, with companies encouraged to begin shifts as early as 7:30 am. Officials believe that spreading out employee arrival times could significantly reduce peak-hour congestion. Another proposal gaining traction is “Work-from-Home Wednesdays,” which would allow a large segment of employees to avoid commuting midweek—offering a breathing space for the overloaded infrastructure.

Supporting Infrastructure in the Works

To complement these recommendations, civic agencies have promised to expedite pending roadwork around ORR. Plans are also underway to introduce designated bus bays at major intersections, streamlining boarding for public transport users.

The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is preparing to roll out air-conditioned buses tailored for the city’s tech workforce. Additionally, companies are being encouraged to set up shuttle services to improve last-mile connectivity across tech parks.

Data-Driven Solutions and Smarter Monitoring

To fine-tune these efforts, traffic monitoring systems are set to get an upgrade. New surveillance cameras will be deployed to gather real-time data on vehicle flow, enabling more informed traffic management decisions.

Broader Recommendations for the IT Corridor

Officials also outlined several steps aimed at improving overall traffic conditions:
• Promoting shared mobility: Encouraging carpooling, shared shuttle services, and improved BMTC coverage across IT zones.
• Better on-ground control: Deploying additional traffic marshals, bicycle patrols, and trained volunteers to handle rush-hour management. Prompt responses to vehicle breakdowns were also emphasized to prevent cascading delays.
• Strict action on illegal parking: Vehicles parked near junctions or on tech campus roads may face immediate towing.
• Heavy vehicle curbs: The tech sector has requested a ban on large trucks along the ORR during key hours. They’ve also asked for advance notice regarding designated work-from-home days—especially on Wednesdays and weekends.

With these changes, city officials and private stakeholders hope to see a noticeable improvement in the traffic situation that has long plagued one of Bengaluru’s most critical tech corridors.
