Bengaluru, July 22:
Once celebrated for its green spaces and modern outlook, Bengaluru has now been ranked among the five dirtiest major cities in India, according to the Swachh Survekshan 2025 results released this week. The city landed in the bottom five in the category of urban centres with a population of over one million.
Despite ongoing infrastructure efforts led by the Siddaramaiah government, the city’s performance in sanitation and public cleanliness has raised concerns. The latest survey results highlight a widening gap between the state’s developmental ambitions and on-ground urban hygiene.
Cities like Indore, Surat, and Navi Mumbai were praised for their exceptional cleanliness initiatives, earning them a spot in the elite ‘Super Swachh League’. Meanwhile, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, and Lucknow were recognised as models of urban sanitation, topping the cleanliness charts in their category.
Bengaluru shares its poor ranking with cities such as Ranchi, Chennai, Ludhiana, and Madurai, all of which were listed among the least clean urban centres in the country.
On the brighter side, cities like Raipur and Jabalpur joined the ranks of the top five cleanest cities, reflecting focused efforts in waste management, sanitation, and civic engagement.
As Bengaluru faces increasing pressure due to rapid urbanisation, experts suggest that a renewed focus on waste management systems, public participation, and enforcement of hygiene standards is urgently needed to reverse this trend.
