BENGALURU / ANANTAPUR: In a major update regarding the horrific school assault in Andhra Pradesh, the right leg of the 21-year-old suspect in the Anantapur chainsaw attack has been amputated above the knee following injuries sustained in a police encounter. Meanwhile, the primary victim—a Class 10 student airlifted for specialized care—has been taken off the ventilator and is showing steady recovery signs at Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru.
Gangrene Leads to Amputation
The suspect underwent surgery early Tuesday morning at the Anantapur Government General Hospital. According to Dr. D. Malleswari, Medical Superintendent of the hospital, the intervention became critical due to severe vascular complications.
The suspect was admitted on Sunday night with severe injuries to both limbs after police retaliated when he allegedly attacked an arresting team with a knife. Surgeons also operated extensively on his left leg, which sustained heavy trauma during the firing. Doctors confirmed that his condition is currently stable.
The Brutal Attack and School Panic
The incident unfolded on Saturday morning when the suspect allegedly forced his way into a local school in Anantapur and targeted the Class 10 student with a mechanized chainsaw. The horrific assault left the teenager with deep lacerations to her neck and abdomen, and her right hand nearly severed. A second student who attempted to intervene was also seriously injured.
Police investigations revealed that the accused was acquainted with the victim and harbored unilateral romantic inclinations, despite explicit warnings from the girl’s family to stay away. The brazen assault created widespread panic across the educational institution, prompting the Andhra Pradesh Education Department to deploy a specialized team of 20 counselors to offer psychological support to traumatized students and teachers.
Positive Medical Bulletin from Bengaluru
Transported for advanced critical care, the survivor is recovering under expert supervision at Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru. Medical teams successfully completed initial orthopedic and plastic surgeries before moving her to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU).
