BENGALURU: In a major crackdown on food safety across the city, the Karnataka Health Department and Food Safety Enforcement officers launched simultaneous raids targeting luxury 5-star hotels in Bengaluru.

According to regional Kannada news channels, prominent establishments including The Lalit Ashok and Shangri-La were among the high-profile properties inspected during the high-stakes enforcement drive aimed at upholding food quality and hygiene standards.

30+ Teams Deployed Across Prime Hospitality Hubs

More than 30 specialized food safety teams conducted synchronized inspections across central and eastern Bengaluru. Officers inspected walk-in freezers, food preparation stations, and raw material storage facilities.

The surprise raids focused on identifying critical violations, including:

 Expired Ingredients: Dairy products and perishable items stored beyond safe usage limits.

 Substandard Raw Materials: Use of unverified, adulterated, or non-graded ingredients.

 Prohibited Additives: Unauthorized artificial dyes and illegal food preservatives.

 Kitchen Sanitation Issues: Non-compliance with hygiene protocols set by health authorities.

“Consumer health and safety take absolute precedence regardless of an establishment’s brand or prestige. Any location found compromising food quality will face strict legal enforcement,” a department official stated during the operations.

Shocking Discoveries: Expired Milk & Rotten Vegetables Seized

Local reports indicate that initial inspections uncovered widespread health code violations. During the raids on premium kitchens:

 Over 20 liters of expired milk were confiscated from refrigeration units.

 Spoiled and rotten vegetables intended for daily food preparation were seized.

 Several unlabeled ingredients and improperly stored meat products were impounded.

Samples collected from kitchens at The Lalit Ashok, Shangri-La, and other inspected properties have been dispatched to state-certified public health laboratories for detailed chemical and biological analysis.

Strict Action & FSSAI Penalties Ahead

Health officials confirmed that formal show-cause notices will be served to hotel managements once laboratory analysis reports are processed.

Under Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) guidelines, non-compliant establishments face penal action ranging from substantial financial penalties to the legal suspension of operating licenses.
