MANDYA: In a shocking incident on the busy Bengaluru-Mysuru highway, the Mandya Police have arrested seven individuals for allegedly targeting a truck driver with an airgun. According to senior police officials, the accused fired for ‘fun’ on the Bengaluru-Mysuru road after getting into a dispute over overtaking on the highway.
The unsettling incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday on the service road of the highway. Mandya District Superintendent of Police (SP), V. J. Shobha Rani, confirmed that the seven youths were returning from a birthday party at a resort in an inebriated condition when they decided to terrorize the truck driver.
Fired for ‘Fun’ Over Overtaking Dispute
Detailing the preliminary investigation, Mandya SP Shobha Rani revealed that the occupants of the luxury SUV grew furious when the goods vehicle ahead did not immediately let them overtake.
“The accused were highly intoxicated. Upset with the truck driver for not allowing their vehicle to overtake, they fired at him from an airgun just for ‘fun’,” the SP stated.
The police have successfully seized the black SUV used in the crime, along with the airgun, two carbon refill cartridges, and the pellets. The weapon and ammunition have been sent to the Forensic Sciences Laboratory (FSL) for further examination.
Midnight Terror on the Highway
The victim, 40-year-old Shankar, who operates a goods vehicle for a Bengaluru-based courier company, filed a formal complaint at the Mandya Rural police station. Shankar was transporting parcels toward Mysuru when the attack occurred around 4:50 AM near a Bharat Petroleum fuel station close to the Amaravathi Hotel.
According to Shankar’s complaint, the black SUV approached aggressively from the left, honking relentlessly before overtaking and abruptly blocking his path. The occupants then rolled down their windows, hurled foul abuse at him, and pointed a weapon. One of the accused fired a shot directly toward the driver’s cabin before speeding off.
Shankar courageously drove all the way to the courier office in Mysuru to safely unload his parcels before approaching the police to report the highway assault.
Police Action and Arrests
Following the complaint, the Mandya Rural Police immediately swung into action, registering a case under Sections 189 (2), 191(3), 352, 126 (2), and 190 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), alongside Section 27 (2) of the Arms Act, 1959.
A special police team led by Mandya Rural Police Inspector Prakash B. S. tracked down the suspects. In a swift operation during the early hours of Friday, all seven accused were rounded up and arrested.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Rohan Gowda H. V. (23), Shashank (25), Afan (25), Mohammed Umar (25), Nithin (27), Mohammed Abubakar Sakalein (25), and Sachin (29). All the accused are residents of Mandya. Further investigation into the incident is currently underway.
