Karnataka Minister D. Sudhakar Passes Away at 66: A Great Loss for Hiriyur and the State

BENGALURU: The Karnataka state cabinet has lost a senior member as Minister for Planning and Statistics, D. Sudhakar, passed away in the early hours of Sunday, May 10, 2026. He was 66.

The veteran leader had been undergoing treatment at the Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) for the past two months. Medical officials confirmed that he succumbed to a severe lung infection at approximately 3:15 AM after his health condition deteriorated significantly over the last fortnight.

A Career Defined by Public Welfare

D. Sudhakar was a stalwart of the Chitradurga region, serving as the MLA for the Hiriyur constituency and holding the post of District In-charge Minister. His political career was defined by a reputation for being approachable and his focus on sustainable development in rural Karnataka.

His journey through the state’s legislative assembly included several key roles:

• First representing Challakere in 2004.

• Serving as Social Welfare Minister in 2008.

• Returning to the cabinet in 2023 to manage the Planning and Statistics portfolio.

Throughout his tenure, he remained a vocal advocate for water conservation projects and rural infrastructure, earning him deep-rooted respect across party lines.

Tributes from the Government

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed his profound sorrow, describing Sudhakar as a “dedicated public servant and a dear colleague.” The Chief Minister noted that Sudhakar’s commitment to his constituency was unparalleled and that the state had lost a seasoned administrator who always put the needs of the common man first.

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar also shared his condolences, highlighting the Minister’s loyalty to the party and his tireless work ethic. Senior leaders from the cabinet are expected to visit the Minister’s residence to pay their respects throughout the day.

Final Rites and Honors

The mortal remains of D. Sudhakar will be kept for public viewing in Hiriyur to allow his supporters and the people of his constituency to bid him farewell.

Following the public viewing, the final rites will be conducted with full state honors in his hometown of Challakere on Monday, May 11, 2026. He is survived by his wife and two children.
