Congress Crisis: Satish Jarkiholi Meets D.K. Shivakumar to Defend Sidelined Muslim Leaders

BENGALURU: The internal rift within the ruling Karnataka Congress reached a boiling point today as PWD Minister Satish Jarkiholi paid a high-stakes visit to Deputy Chief Minister and KPCC President D.K. Shivakumar’s residence. Far from a routine administrative consultation, the meeting was a pointed diplomatic intervention regarding the party’s recent treatment of its senior Muslim leadership.

The Catalyst: Suspensions and Sacking

The urgency behind Jarkiholi’s visit stems from a series of disciplinary actions that have rattled the Congress’s minority wing. Specifically, the Minister is championing the cause of two veteran leaders:

1. MLC Abdul Jabbar: Recently suspended from the party on charges of anti-party activity.

2. Naseer Ahmed: The veteran leader who was recently removed from his influential post as the Political Secretary to the Chief Minister.

Jarkiholi’s ‘Justice’ Mission

According to sources close to the development, Satish Jarkiholi—often seen as a champion of the AHINDA (Minorities, Backward Classes, and Dalits) cause—expressed his deep displeasure to Shivakumar. Jarkiholi reportedly argued that the sudden disciplinary actions against minority leaders are being perceived as a targeted “cleansing” that could devastate the party’s base.

“The Minister made it clear that taking such harsh steps against leaders who have stood by the party for decades is a strategic error,” a source in the Political Bureau revealed. Jarkiholi is believed to have demanded a “middle-path” solution to reinstate these leaders to prevent a full-blown rebellion within the minority community.

The Power Play: Siddaramaiah vs. Shivakumar?

The optics of the meeting are significant. Both Jabbar and Naseer Ahmed are considered staunch loyalists of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. Their sidelining is being viewed by many as an attempt by the KPCC President’s camp to consolidate power and trim the influence of the CM’s inner circle.

By taking the lead in this negotiation, Satish Jarkiholi has positioned himself as the primary mediator between the two power blocs, ensuring that the grievances of the minority leaders reach the highest levels of the KPCC.

D.K. Shivakumar’s Stance

Following the meeting, the atmosphere remained tense. While the Deputy CM maintained that “party discipline is non-negotiable,” the pressure from Jarkiholi—a powerful figure in his own right with significant influence in North Karnataka—cannot be easily dismissed.

The KPCC is now in a tight spot: revoking the suspension might appear as a sign of weakness, while maintaining it risks alienating a community that has been the backbone of the Congress’s recent electoral victories.

What’s Next?

The outcome of this meeting will likely dictate the internal harmony of the Congress party in the coming months. If Satish Jarkiholi succeeds in his mediation, it will cement his role as a “crisis manager.” If not, the state may witness a coordinated protest from minority leaders, potentially shifting the political landscape ahead of the local body elections.
