Karnataka Congress Crackdown: MLC Abdul Jabbar Suspended for ‘Anti-Party Activities’ in Davanagere South Bypoll

BENGALURU: In a major disciplinary move, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) has suspended three-time MLC K. Abdul Jabbar from the primary membership of the party with immediate effect. The decision, announced on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, follows allegations of “anti-party activities” during the recently concluded by-election for the Davanagere South Assembly constituency.

The suspension order was signed by Deputy Chief Minister and KPCC President D.K. Shivakumar.

The Grounds for Suspension

The disciplinary action centers on Jabbar’s alleged role in undermining the party’s official candidate, Samarth Mallikarjun, in the Davanagere South bypoll. Key factors cited include:

• Ticket Discontent: Jabbar was a leading aspirant for the Davanagere South ticket. After the party chose Samarth—grandson of the late veteran leader Shamanur Shivashankarappa—Jabbar reportedly expressed dissatisfaction.
• Sabotage Allegations: Reports from AICC observers allegedly indicated that Jabbar and other minority leaders supported a rival candidate from the SDPI to split the minority vote.
• Resignation & Dissolution: Prior to his suspension, Jabbar had resigned as the chairperson of the KPCC Minority Cell. Following his exit, Shivakumar dissolved all minority committees formed under Jabbar’s leadership.

Broader Fallout in the Congress

Jabbar’s suspension is part of a wider purge within the state unit following the April 9 by-elections.

• Naseer Ahmed Removed: On April 13, MLC Naseer Ahmed was relieved of his duties as the Political Secretary to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for similar alleged anti-party activities.
• Factional Tensions: The crackdown has exposed a rift between minority leaders. While some legislators like Rizwan Arshad and Saleem Ahmedaccused Jabbar of conspiracy, Jabbar has claimed he is being unfairly targeted and was never invited to campaign by the official candidate.

Jabbar‘s Reaction

Responding to the news, Jabbar stated he learned of his suspension through the media and has yet to receive the official letter. He questioned the evidence against him, asking for proof of the alleged “anti-party” videos or audio recordings, while maintaining that he has served the party loyally since his NSUI days.

The results for the Davanagere South by-election are scheduled to be announced on May 4, 2026.
