Veteran Kannada actor Singri Gowda, fondly remembered as Century Gowda from the critically acclaimed film Thithi, passed away at the age of 100 on January 4, 2026. The centenarian actor breathed his last at his residence in Mandya district, Karnataka, following age-related health complications.
Singri Gowda had been bedridden for the past few months after suffering a hip fracture due to a fall. His health reportedly deteriorated gradually owing to old age. Family members confirmed that he passed away peacefully.
He rose to national and international prominence with his unforgettable portrayal of the irascible patriarch Century Gowda in Thithi (2015), a Kannada black comedy-drama that received widespread acclaim at global film festivals. Despite having no formal acting background, Singri Gowda’s natural performance became the soul of the film and earned him lasting recognition.
Thithi was notable for its use of non-professional actors from rural Karnataka, lending authenticity to its storytelling. Singri Gowda’s character, whose death sets off the film’s narrative, became iconic for its realism and humour, making him a beloved figure among cinema lovers.
Singri Gowda’s passing marks the end of an extraordinary life and a rare cinematic journey that began late but left a permanent imprint on Indian parallel cinema. His contribution to Kannada cinema will continue to be remembered with respect and admiration.
