D K Shivakumar Sees Renewed Hope in Becoming Chief Minister After Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Post- Bihar’ Directive

New Delhi/Bengaluru:

Even as Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah reaffirmed his intention to serve a full five-year term and denied any prior or ongoing discussions on power-sharing within the party, a subtle yet significant message from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has added a new dimension to the ongoing speculation surrounding leadership transition in the state.

On the same day as Siddaramaiah’s remarks, Rahul Gandhi, through senior party leader Randeep Singh Surjewala, directed both the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar—as well as all Congress MLAs in Karnataka—to refrain from making any public statements regarding power-sharing until the conclusion of the Bihar Assembly elections, scheduled for October-November this year.

This directive, while ostensibly aimed at maintaining internal discipline, has renewed optimism within Shivakumar’s camp. The instruction not to discuss the issue “Until after “the Bihar elections is being interpreted by some within the party as an implicit acknowledgment that leadership discussions could resume once the electoral dust settles in Bihar.

Had the Congress high command ruled out any possibility of a leadership change, observers note, a more categorical denial of future talks might have been expected. Instead, Rahul Gandhi’s carefully worded message leaves the door open for a potential revisit of the issue later this year.

For D.K. Shivakumar, who has long nurtured aspirations of leading the state, this development offers a fresh wave of hope. The political landscape in Karnataka is likely to see renewed churn post-Bihar elections, with power-sharing discussions potentially back on the table.

All eyes will now be on the Congress high command as it balances electoral strategy at the national level with internal leadership dynamics in one of its key southern bastions.
