Dr. H.S. Venkatesha Murthy, affectionately known as HSV departed this world in the quiet dawn of May 30, 2025. Karnataka lost one of its most cherished literary voices. His legacy that resonates deeply within the hearts of Kannada literature and cinema enthusiasts.

Born on June 23, 1944, in Hodigere village of Chitradurga district, HSV’s journey from a humble beginning to becoming a luminary in Kannada literature is nothing short of inspirational. he nurtured countless minds and instilled in them a love for the Kannada language and its rich literary heritage during his three decades tenure as a professor at St. Joseph’s College of Commerce in Bengaluru.

HSV wrote over 100 books in his lifetime, each one adding new colour to the Kannada literary canvas. He wasn’t just a poet. He was a storyteller, a playwright, a critic, a translator, and a voice for children too. His poetry collections like Kriyaparva, Dryamarada Girigalu, and Vaidehi weren’t just about rhyme, they were about life. He wrote about love, pain, longing, and the quiet questions we ask ourselves when no one’s looking. His plays like Agnivarna and Manthare brought forgotten characters and layered emotions to life on stage.
HSV didn’t just write books, he wrote for the big screen too. His lyrics lit up popular films like Kirik Party, where the song Thoogu Manchadalli Koothu became a favourite with young people. His stories also shaped touching films like Chinnari Mutha, Kotreshi Kanasu, and America America that resonated with audiences across generations.

Recognition for HSV’s monumental contributions came in the form of numerous accolades, including the prestigious Bala Puraskar Award from the Central Sahitya Akademi. His leadership was further acknowledged when he presided over the 85th All India Kannada Sahitya Sammelana in Kalaburagi, a testament to his stature in the literary community.

As we mourn the loss of Dr. H.S. Venkatesha Murthy, we also celebrate a life dedicated to the enrichment of Kannada literature and culture. His words, teachings, and melodies will continue to inspire, guiding future generations in their literary pursuits. In his own words, perhaps, “Life is transient, but art endures,” and through his art, HSV achieves immortality.

May his soul find eternal peace, and may his legacy continue to illuminate the path for aspiring writers and artists.
