AMRAVATI: The ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has registered a historic landslide victory in the 2026 Andhra Pradesh municipal election results, completely reshaping the state’s urban political landscape. The coalition, comprising the TDP, Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena Party (JSP), and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), decimated the opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) by capturing 12 out of the 13 major municipal corporations.

The final declarations by the Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission (SEC) show a total reversal of the 2021 civic body mandate. While the YSRCP had swept all corporations five years ago, the Jagan Mohan Reddy-led party has now been reduced to just a single municipal corporation. The Indian National Congress (INC) failed to open its account in any major urban local body, leaving the state tightly under the control of the ruling alliance.

NDA Dominates Key Urban Centers and Corporations

The vote counting, which began on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, using paper ballots, quickly turned into a one-sided wave for the ruling alliance. The NDA showcased absolute dominance in the state’s primary urban hubs:

  • Vijayawada Municipal Corporation: Out of 86 total wards, the alliance secured a massive majority. The TDP won 53 wards, followed by the Jana Sena Party with 19 wards and the BJP with 4. The YSRCP managed just 8 seats, while the CPI(M) and an Independent took 1 each.
  • Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC): The coalition established an unbeatable lead early in the count. Out of the 60 initially declared wards, the NDA claimed 51 seats (TDP: 33, JSP: 15, BJP: 4), leaving only 5 for the YSRCP.
  • Guntur Municipal Corporation: The alliance comfortably seized the civic body, with the TDP winning 48 divisions, the Jana Sena Party taking 13, and the BJP securing 3. The YSRCP was restricted to 11 divisions.
  • Tirupati Municipal Corporation: TDP mayoral candidate Manne Srinivasa Prasad secured a high-margin win, defeating his closest YSRCP rival by 30,972 votes.

Clean sweeps and comprehensive mayoral mandates were also finalized for the TDP-NDA coalition in Chittoor, Nellore, Machilipatnam, Kurnool, Eluru, Vizianagaram, and Kadapa. The Jana Sena Party achieved its own historic milestone, maintaining an exceptionally high strike rate in the urban segments it contested.

YSRCP Cleared from Urban Bastions, Retains Anantapur

The final data highlights a severe electoral setback for the YSRCP. The party lost control of almost all its previous strongholds, successfully retaining only the Anantapur Municipal Corporation, where Ramesh Goud won the mayoral post.

Statewide ward breakdowns reveal the vast scale of the NDA’s sweep. Out of 3,942 total contested municipal wards, the TDP won over 2,410 seats, while the YSRCP finished with approximately 505 wards. In a major blow to the opposition, the TDP-led alliance breached Pulivendula municipality—a pocket traditionally considered an unassailable bastion for YSRCP chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Responding to the final declarations, YSRCP chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy heavily criticized the state administration. He alleged extensive manipulation of the election environment by the ruling machinery and called for immediate, systemic electoral reforms.

Congress Fails to Make an Impact

The Indian National Congress (INC), led by Y.S. Sharmila, could not turn the tide or present a significant challenge in these urban local body polls. The party failed to win any major municipal chairperson or corporation divisions. Even high-profile Independent candidates backed by the Congress party, such as former IPS officer AB Venkateswara Rao in Vijayawada, could not withstand the intense bipolar momentum generated by the NDA wave.

With the official gazette notifications now being finalized by the State Election Commission, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s administration has successfully extended its administrative hold from the state assembly down to the grassroots urban governance level.
