Congress MLC Salim Ahmed Elected Chairman of Karnataka Legislative Council

Congress Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Salim Ahmed was on Friday elected as the Chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council. He defeated the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate P.H. Pujari in a voting process necessitated by the resignation of former Chairman Basavaraj Horatti.

Announcing the election results on the floor of the House, Interim Chairman Puttanna confirmed that Salim Ahmed secured 38 votes, while BJP’s P.H. Pujari received 30 votes.

 Opposition Candidate: P.H. Pujari (BJP) — 30 votes

 Proposer: B.K. Hariprasad (Congress MLC)

 Reason for Election: Vacancy created by the resignation of former Chairman Basavaraj Horatti.

Procedural Breakdown in the Upper House

The election was conducted in accordance with Rule 7(5) of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Karnataka Legislative Council.

Interim Chairman Puttanna informed the House that the first motion, moved by senior legislator B.K. Hariprasad and seconded by Dr. Yathindra S., was approved by a majority vote.

“Under Rule 7 of the Rules of Procedure, the House has approved the motion moved by B.K. Hariprasad and seconded by Dr. Yathindra S. Therefore, I declare Salim Ahmed duly elected as the Chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council,” announced Puttanna.

Following the declaration of the result, Interim Chairman Puttanna requested the Leader of the House, the Leader of the Opposition, as well as the proposer and seconder of the motion, to formally escort the newly elected Chairman Salim Ahmed to the Chair.
