Karnataka Cabinet Expansion Backlash: Congress Triggers Damage Control to Pacify Sulking MLAs

BENGALURU: In the wake of mounting dissatisfaction and widespread street protests by supporters of sidelined lawmakers following the recent Cabinet expansion, the ruling Congress leadership in Karnataka has initiated high-level damage control measures to quell rebellion within its ranks.
Senior party leadership has begun active outreach to aggrieved legislators, signaling plans to offer key party positions and appointments to state-run boards and corporations to restore internal stability.
Surjewala Lands in Bengaluru to Spearhead Outreach
AICC General Secretary in-charge of Karnataka, Randeep Singh Surjewala, arrived in Bengaluru on Wednesday to head the peace-building efforts. In a series of meetings aimed at soothing frayed tempers, Mr. Surjewala met senior Vokkaliga leader and former Minister M. Krishnappa along with his son, Govindarajnagar MLA Priya Krishna. Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Minister B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan were also present during the discussion. Both father and son had anticipated at least one Cabinet berth following Priya Krishna’s high-profile victory against the BJP in 2023.
Mr. Surjewala also held talks with former Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil, who reportedly expressed strong disappointment over being omitted from the expanded ministry.
Pre-Monsoon Session Firefighting
Party insiders revealed that the outreach campaign is critical ahead of the upcoming Monsoon Session of the State Legislature, scheduled to begin next week. The leadership is anxious to prevent public outbursts or floor rebellions that could hand tactical advantages to the Opposition.
Simultaneously, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is reportedly unhappy with recent political developments, and party heavyweights are expected to engage with him directly in the coming days.
Meanwhile, firm warnings issued by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar have succeeded in curbing resignation threats. Key legislators who had previously threatened to step down—including Sagar MLA Belur Gopalakrishna, Indi MLA Yashwanthrayagoud V. Patil, and Raichur Rural MLA Basanagouda Daddal—have backtracked and pledged to remain loyal to the party.
Rebalancing Regional and Caste Dynamics
KPCC leadership reiterated that accommodating sidelined leaders remains a top priority. Senior leader B.K. Hariprasad met several discontented legislators, including Dinesh Gundu Rao, T.B. Jayachandra, and Ashok Pattan.
Addressing reporters after meeting H.K. Patil, Mr. Hariprasad assured that grievances would be addressed systematically. He noted that the Cabinet choices were largely guided by social justice principles, prioritizing representation for SC, ST, OBC, and minority communities.
To balance regional and caste equations, the party plans to request current chairpersons of government boards and corporations—appointed during the previous Siddaramaiah tenure—to vacate their posts to accommodate senior lawmakers and party loyalists.
