BENGALURU, August 9, 2025 — In a landmark decision, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has approved the construction of a state-of-the-art sports complex in Surya City, Bommasandra, featuring an 80,000-seat cricket stadium—making it India’s second-largest venue, next only to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The sprawling ₹1,650 crore project will be fully funded by the Karnataka Housing Board, without direct government financial support.

Beyond Cricket: A Comprehensive Sports Destination

Set across 100 acres, the proposed facility will host not only cricket but also facilities for eight indoor and eight outdoor sports. The master plan includes modern gyms, Olympic-sized swimming pools, training centres, guest houses, hostels, both three-star and five-star hotels, and a convention hall designed to accommodate international events.

Built in Response to Safety Concerns

The proposal comes in the aftermath of a tragic stampede at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during the IPL 2025 celebrations, which resulted in 11 fatalities. A judicial inquiry by the Justice John Michael Cunha Commission identified the existing 32,000-seat stadium, situated on a compact 17-acre site, as unsafe for large-scale events and recommended relocating major fixtures to more spacious locations with improved safety infrastructure.

A New Chapter in Bengaluru’s Sporting Infrastructure

The new Bommasandra stadium aims to address logistical challenges and elevate Bengaluru’s profile as a premier destination for international cricket, IPL matches, and large sporting events. Built with safety, crowd management, and spectator comfort in mind, the project signals a major upgrade in the city’s sporting infrastructure.
