BENGALURU: Following the tragic electrocution deaths of two foreign nationals at a luxury five-star hotel’s third-floor swimming pool in Halasuru, fresh details have emerged after family members alleged grave safety oversights and severe maintenance negligence by the hotel management.

The victims have been identified as Alexander Maximilian Theiss, a German national and Lufthansa crew member staying in the city during a layover, and Juraj Horvat, a Slovakian national working as a project manager with IBM in Bengaluru. The incident occurred on Friday evening shortly after the swimming pool’s underwater lighting system was switched on. Two others—a US tourist and an Indian pool attendant—were also injured while attempting to rescue the victims.

Police Case Registered & BESCOM Probe Initiated

Following complaints and reports of negligence raised by the family of one of the victims, Bengaluru Police booked the Conrad Hotel management under charges of causing death by negligence. Local law enforcement and electrical inspectors are conducting a technical audit of the property’s electrical wiring.

Initial findings by Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) officials suggest possible faulty earthing or failure in fault-current trip devices in the underwater lighting network.

Hotel Response & Pool Closure

In a formal statement, the management of Conrad Bengaluru expressed deep sorrow over the incident and offered condolences to the affected families. The management stated that the exact cause of the fault has not yet been established and confirmed that they are cooperating fully with the ongoing police and electrical inspectorate investigation.

The hotel’s swimming pool has been immediately closed for maintenance through November 30.
