BENGALURU: The intense political war of words between Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge and Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries H.D. Kumaraswamy has taken a fresh turn. In his latest remarks, Priyank Kharge claimed that an emotional appeal by JD(S) supremo and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda was instrumental in ensuring H.D. Kumaraswamy secured a cabinet berth in the Union Ministry.

The ongoing war of words between the two leaders has escalated significantly against the backdrop of controversies involving sting operations, police questioning, and high-stakes political positioning in the state.

The Background of the Clash

The friction intensified after Kumaraswamy launched a scathing attack on the Congress-led state government over the handling of a recent political sting operation. Visiting the Bengaluru Police Commissioner’s office to protest the arrest of JD(S) party workers, Kumaraswamy had aggressively challenged the state machinery, questioning whether the Home Department “belonged to Priyank Kharge’s father” and daring the government to question him directly instead of targeting grassroots workers.

In a sharp counter-offensive, Priyank Kharge dismissed the Union Minister’s challenges and maintained that the law would take its course regarding the ongoing investigations. Shifting focus to intra-alliance dynamics within the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Kharge alleged that Kumaraswamy’s entry into the Union Cabinet was largely facilitated by a sentimental appeal made by his father, H.D. Deve Gowda, rather than political leverage alone.

Escalating Political Rhetoric

The exchange has brought state-level friction into national focus, with leaders from both sides trading charges of institutional misuse and political arrogance. While Kumaraswamy accused the state administration of exercising high-handedness and diverting public attention from core governance issues, Kharge maintained that leaders demanding transparency must also subject themselves to accountability without seeking immunity for associates.

As the verbal duel continues to grab headlines across Karnataka, political analysts view these developments as an early sign of a hardening battle lines between the ruling Congress and the opposition JD(S)-BJP alliance ahead of upcoming political maneuvers in the state.
