A Self-Made Journey: From Painting Posters to Cinematic Greatness
Born Vishwanath Patekar on January 1, 1951, in Murud-Janjira, Maharashtra, Nana Patekar’s rise to prominence was defined by grit and resilience.
After his family faced severe financial collapse during his early teenage years, 13-year-old Patekar walked eight kilometers daily after school to paint film posters in Chunabhatti, earning just ₹35 a month.
Over a four-decade career, Patekar redefined acting in Hindi and Marathi cinema with his sharp dialogue delivery, intense screen presence, and raw emotional power. His roles in films such as Parinda, Krantiveer, Prahaar, Ab Tak Chhappan, Khamoshi, and the blockbuster comedy Welcome established him as one of the most versatile artists in Indian film history.
Philanthropy and Social Activism
Beyond the silver screen, Nana Patekar was deeply respected for his political voice and social commitment.
In 2015, alongside actor Makarand Anaspure, Patekar co-founded the NAAM Foundation. The non-profit organization raised tens of crores of rupees to provide financial relief, water harvesting systems, and livelihood rehabilitation to drought-affected farmers across Maharashtra.
His fierce independence, blunt honesty, and relentless advocacy for agrarian communities earned him admiration across political spectrums.
