BENGALURU: In a move that has ignited excitement across the South Indian film fraternity, acclaimed director K M Chaitanya has officially announced his next directorial venture. Stepping away from his signature gritty dramas, Chaitanya is set to helm a massive historical epic titled ‘Ereya’, based on the life and conquests of the legendary Chalukya monarch, Pulikeshi II.

Reviving the Golden Age of the Chalukyas

The film’s title, Ereya, refers to the birth name of the emperor before he ascended the throne as Pulikeshi II. The project aims to capture the 6th-century “Golden Age” of the Deccan, a period marked by architectural marvels and military supremacy.

Pulikeshi II is best remembered by historians for his strategic brilliance, most notably for halting the southern expansion of the mighty Northern Emperor Harshavardhana on the banks of the Narmada River.

Speaking on the vision for the film, Chaitanya emphasized that the project is the result of years of meticulous preparation. The narrative is built upon rigorous historical research conducted by renowned scholar Dr. Bhushan Shanbhag, ensuring that the film balances cinematic grandeur with factual integrity.

A Pan-India Production

Produced by Sunit Javadekar and Nivedita Kothare under the Wingspan Motion Pictures LLP banner, Ereya is being positioned as a high-budget, multi-lingual spectacle.

Project Highlights:

• Title: Ereya

• Director: K M Chaitanya

• Lead Historian: Dr. Bhushan Shanbhag

• Languages: Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, and Malayalam

• Production House: Wingspan Motion Pictures LLP

Modernizing a Legacy

The story of Pulikeshi II holds a sacred place in Kannada cinema history, famously portrayed by the legendary Dr. Rajkumar in the 1967 classic Immadi Pulikeshi. However, Chaitanya’s Ereya is expected to offer a contemporary perspective, utilizing cutting-edge VFX and modern storytelling techniques to bring the 7th-century landscape to life for a global audience.

The director is currently in the final stages of his upcoming film Balaramana Dinagalu, starring Vinod Prabhakar. Once completed, his full focus will shift to the pre-production and set construction for this royal saga.

Casting Speculations

While the announcement has set social media ablaze, the production team has remained tight-lipped regarding the lead actor. Industry insiders suggest that several top-tier stars from the Kannada film industry are being considered for the titular role, as the character requires a performer capable of portraying both the vulnerability of a young prince and the commanding presence of a conqueror.

With Ereya, the Kannada film industry continues its streak of ambitious storytelling, looking to reclaim its history on the grandest stage possible.
