Ballari, Jan. 2, 2026 — A firing incident outside the residence of senior BJP leader and former minister G. Janardhan Reddy has shaken Ballari and sent political tremors across Karnataka, leaving one person dead, several injured, and dramatically reshaping equations within the state’s BJP unit.

What began as a dispute over political banners ahead of a Valmiki statue unveiling spiralled into a violent clash involving stone-pelting, gunfire and police intervention, exposing the volatile undercurrents of local politics.

How a Banner Dispute Turned Deadly

The violence erupted in the Havambhavi area when supporters of Congress MLA Nara Bharath Reddy attempted to erect banners near Janardhan Reddy’s residence. Objections from rival supporters quickly escalated the confrontation.

Eyewitnesses said stones were hurled from both sides before gunshots rang out, killing a 26-year-old Congress worker. Police rushed to the spot, resorted to a lathi charge and dispersed the crowd to bring the situation under control.

Multiple criminal cases, including murder and attempt to murder, have been registered. Investigators are probing how firearms were brought to the scene and who fired the fatal shots.

Accusations Fly as Political Tempers Rise

In the immediate aftermath, Janardhan Reddy alleged that the incident was a planned attack aimed at eliminating him, claiming that armed assailants used the banner issue as a cover for violence.

Congress MLA Nara Bharath Reddy rejected the allegations, accusing Janardhan Reddy’s supporters of provoking the clash and demanding swift arrests for the killing of his party worker.

The incident has intensified political bitterness in Ballari, a region long known for its high-stakes power struggles.

Sriramulu Steps Forward, Old Ties Revived

One of the most striking outcomes of the Bellary firing has been the renewed public solidarity between BJP leaders B. Sriramulu and G. Janardhan Reddy.

Sriramulu, who strongly condemned the violence, termed the firing a shocking breakdown of law and order and alleged a deliberate attempt on Janardhan Reddy’s life. His forceful intervention has rekindled a friendship that had cooled in recent years due to internal party differences and leadership rivalry.

The crisis has pushed both leaders to set aside past disputes, close ranks and present a united front, signalling a significant shift in Ballari’s political dynamics.

BJP State Unit Closes Ranks

The fallout from the incident has also led to rare unity within the Karnataka BJP, particularly in the Kalyana Karnataka region, where factionalism has often weakened the party’s organisational strength.

Alarmed by the gravity of the violence and its political implications, BJP leaders across the state have rallied behind their senior leaders, stressing discipline, unity and the need to prevent local rivalries from erupting into lawlessness.

Party insiders say the episode has become a rallying point, compelling leaders to prioritise collective strength over internal differences.

A Defining Moment for Ballari Politics

As the police investigation continues, the political impact of the Bellary firing is already unmistakable. A clash triggered by banners has evolved into a defining moment — one that has revived old alliances, reshaped internal power equations and temporarily unified a fractured party unit.

Whether the renewed bond between Sriramulu and Janardhan Reddy endures beyond this crisis remains to be seen. For now, the Bellary incident stands as a stark reminder of how violence, politics and power intersect — and how moments of turmoil can unexpectedly redraw political relationships.
