Veteran Actor M.S. Umesh Passes Away at 80, Karnataka Mourns a Comic Legend

Veteran Kannada actor M.S. Umesh, one of the most beloved comic performers of Kannada cinema, passed away on Sunday, November 30, 2025, at the age of 80, following a prolonged battle with stage-four liver cancer. He breathed his last at Kidwai Hospital in Bengaluru, leaving behind a rich legacy that spans over six decades.

Umesh, whose career began as a child artist in Makkala Rajya (1960), went on to feature in more than 400 films, shaping the comic landscape of Kannada cinema with his distinctive timing, expressive performances and unforgettable supporting roles. He shared screen space with icons such as Dr. Rajkumar, Vishnuvardhan, Ambareesh, and Anant Nag, earning admiration for both his professionalism and his ability to bring warmth and humour to even the simplest scenes.

Some of his most cherished performances came in films like Guru Shishyaru and the hugely popular Golmaal Radhakrishna series, where his effortless comedy won him generations of admirers.

Condolences poured in from across Karnataka soon after the news of his passing. Former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy remembered Umesh as an artist who “used to immerse audiences in a sea of laughter,” calling his death an irreplaceable loss to the Kannada film fraternity.

The film industry, colleagues, and fans continue to mourn the departure of a man whose life was dedicated to spreading joy on screen.
