Kannada Literary Giant S.L. Bhyrappa Passes Away at 94; Nation Mourns

BENGALURU: Eminent Kannada novelist, philosopher, and thinker Santeshivara Lingannaiah “S.L.” Bhyrappa died this Wednesday in Bengaluru after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was 94.

Bhyrappa was admitted to Rashtrotthana Hospital, where doctors confirmed that he went into cardiac arrest at approximately 2:38 pm. Born on August 20, 1931, in Hassan, Karnataka, he went on to become one of Kannada’s most influential literary figures.

Over the decades, Bhyrappa authored around 25 novels, starting with Bheemakaya (1958). His works have been widely translated into Hindi and other languages, making his ideas accessible beyond Karnataka. In addition to his writing, he spent over 30 years teaching philosophy at NCERT, Delhi.

In recognition of his contributions to literature and education, Bhyrappa was honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award (2015), the Padma Shri (2016), and in 2023, the government awarded him the Padma Bhushan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief on social media, describing Bhyrappa as “a towering stalwart who stirred our conscience” and praising his dedication to Indian history, culture, and critical thought.

He leaves behind a legacy of profound literary and philosophical inquiry that has inspired readers and thinkers across generations.
