Whistle-Blower Mahesh Thimarodi Arrested After Remarks Against B.L. Santosh: Congress Faces Backlash

Bengaluru: The arrest of Mahesh Thimarodi , the whistle-blower in the controversial Dharmasthala burial case, has reignited political tensions in Karnataka. Thimarody , who had earlier made headlines for exposing irregularities surrounding the Dharmasthala incident, was taken into custody this week for allegedly making derogatory remarks against BJP national general secretary (organisation) B.L. Santosh on social media.

While the arrest itself has stirred debate on free speech and political vendetta, the handling of the episode by the ruling Congress government has triggered sharp criticism. Instead of defending the right to dissent, the Congress has been accused of conveniently using the police machinery to target individuals who speak against its political rivals, thereby appearing selective and inconsistent in its approach.

Opposition leaders claim the Congress is trying to balance equations with powerful Lingayat and Brahmin vote banks by acting against critics of BJP stalwarts, even if it means suppressing whistle-blowers. Political observers note that the same government, which often claims to champion freedom of expression, has remained silent in protecting Thimarody’s rights, leading to allegations of double standards.

The BJP, for its part, has accused the Congress of “opportunistic politics,” pointing out that the ruling party is happy to look the other way when its own leaders face criticism, but quick to act when BJP heavyweights are dragged into controversy.

The incident has sparked discussions on whether Congress is inadvertently strengthening the BJP by attempting to stifle voices like Thimmarody’s. Critics say that instead of exposing the contradictions within the BJP, the Congress has ended up projecting itself as intolerant and complicit.

As the matter gains traction on social media and in political circles, questions are being raised not just about the limits of free expression, but also about Congress’ credibility in standing by whistle-blowers. For now, the arrest of Mahesh Thimarodi seems to have provided the BJP with an unexpected political advantage.
