Rajiv Gandhi Empowered India’s Youth with Voting Rights and Technology Revolution: DK Shivakumar

Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Sunday said that former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi played a historic role in shaping India’s democracy by granting voting rights to 18-year-olds and spearheading the nation’s technology revolution.

Speaking after flagging off the “Run for Rajiv” marathon near Bengaluru’s Kanteerava Stadium, Shivakumar recalled his younger days of participating in long-distance runs and emphasized Rajiv Gandhi’s visionary leadership.

“Before Rajiv Gandhi, Indians could vote only after the age of 21. It was Rajiv Gandhi who reduced the voting age to 18, empowering millions of young people to participate in democracy. Though the Opposition criticized the move, he stood firm,” Shivakumar said.

He highlighted Gandhi’s belief that if 16-year-olds could defend the nation in the Army, then 18-year-olds should have the right to defend democracy through the ballot box.

Rajiv Gandhi and India’s Technology Revolution

Shivakumar, recalling his student days as an NSUI leader, said that back then, even getting a landline connection took three to four years.

“Today, every youth has a mobile phone in hand. This digital transformation was made possible because of Rajiv Gandhi’s vision for a technology-driven India,” he added.

He also praised Rajiv Gandhi as a martyr who sacrificed his life for India’s unity, integrity, and peace, urging today’s youth to walk in his footsteps.

Bengaluru’s Global Recognition

Shivakumar noted that Bengaluru has now become Greater Bengaluru, drawing worldwide recognition.

“Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself said that the world is looking at India through Bengaluru. This recognition has come because of your contribution,” Shivakumar told the marathon participants.

Massive Youth Participation

The Run for Rajiv marathon witnessed participation from over 20,000 young people across Bengaluru. Shivakumar congratulated the youth leaders who organized the event, saying it was a fitting tribute to the late Prime Minister.

Concluding his address with a Sanskrit blessing, Shivakumar wished prosperity, good health, and wisdom for all participants.
