The overnight demolition of late actor Vishnuvardhan’s memorial at Abhiman

BENGALURU, August 9, 2025 — The peaceful morning was broken by uproar when fans of Kannada legend Dr. Vishnuvardhan discovered that his memorial at Abhiman Studio in Kengeri had been demolished under police protection, allegedly following a High Court order. The structure, located at the site where he was cremated in December 2009, has been a long-standing battleground for fans and legal authorities.

A Heated Legacy: Legal Disputes and Devotion Collide

The land on which the memorial stood belonged to the family of veteran actor Balakrishna and had been locked in a prolonged legal dispute. Supporters had fought for years to preserve the site as a permanent tribute to the late star, but court rulings eventually allowed for its removal. The decision triggered immediate backlash from the actor’s admirers.

Raw Emotions and Rising Tensions: From Tears to Accusations

Supporters flooded the streets outside Abhiman Studio, raising slogans and blocking traffic. Police intervened, detaining several protesters as tensions rose. Film director Ravi Srivathsa posted a video describing the demolition of “my god’s place” as deeply painful.
Members of Vishnuvardhan’s fan organisations voiced frustration over being powerless in the legal fight. Some accused authorities of ignoring their decade-long campaign and alleged that the land might be redeveloped into a commercial complex.

Bigger Tribute Elsewhere: Mysuru’s Expansive Memorial

While the Abhiman Studio site is now gone, fans can still visit a comprehensive memorial near Mysuru. Spread over 2.75 acres, it includes a gallery, auditorium, classrooms, an 8-ft statue, rare photographs, costumes worn by the actor, and awards he received. The project was officially inaugurated in January 2023, following the foundation stone laying in 2020.
