Bengaluru, July 20– The Ram Manohar Lohia thinkers forum has submitted a formal legal appeal to the Prime Minister of India, urging the government to include a photograph of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on Indian currency notes. The appeal has also been shared with key Congress leaders, including AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi.

The Forum , led by former Supreme Court Judge Justice Gopal Gowda, renowned authors Baraguru Ramachandrappa and Banjagere Jayaprakash, and Forum Chairman B.S.Shivanna, argues that while Mahatma Gandhi’s image continues to feature on currency notes, the absence of Dr. Ambedkar is a significant oversight.

In the appeal, the Forum emphasized that Ambedkar’s legacy as the principal architect of the Indian Constitution and a champion of equality, social justice, and women’s rights deserves national recognition. Including his image on currency, they argue, would serve as a powerful reminder of his enduring contribution to Indian democracy and the upliftment of marginalized communities.

“This is not an attempt to diminish the stature of Mahatma Gandhi,” the letter states, “but rather a call to honor another towering figure in India’s democratic journey.”

Speaking to Bangalore Mail, Lohia Thinkers Forum Chairman B.S.Shivanna said, “If implemented, this would mark one of the most significant social movements since independence. The movement will start all over the country to fulfil our demand. Dr. Ambedkar is a world-renowned leader whose contributions are respected across the globe and is the true icon of Indian democracy ,renowned for his world famous constitution .”

Shivanna further added “We wrote letters to President of India, RBI governor also to implement our demand . The Union government must act immediately, other wise the Forum will file a PIL in the Supreme Court and hold national wide movement on this matter.”

The Forum further stated that a visible representation of Ambedkar in public symbols, such as currency notes, is essential to promote constitutional values and acknowledge his role in shaping modern India.

The proposal has received support from various progressive thinkers, civil society organizations, and activists across Bengaluru and beyond.
