Bengaluru: A resounding 91% of Bengalureans have voiced their support for Metro Phase 3A over the proposed ₹17,780 crore car-only tunnel, according to an online poll conducted by Bengaluru Central MP P.C. Mohan.
The poll, conducted on X (formerly Twitter) with over 3,500 respondents, reignited public discourse around the city’s future transport infrastructure. “The message is clear,” Mohan posted. “Bengaluru needs suburban rail, metro connectivity, more buses with bus lanes, walkable footpaths, cycling infrastructure and pothole-free roads.”
The results sparked widespread reactions online, with citizens urging elected representatives to act. “Make these issues your top priority for the next elections and execute them—you’ll get re-elected,” one user commented. Others questioned delays in current Metro phases and demanded accountability.
Criticism wasn’t limited to tunnel plans alone. Frustrated voices pointed to ongoing Metro delays. “First finish Phase 2, 2A and 2B, then talk about 3A,” one user wrote.
The tunnel proposal, defended by the Congress government as a “bold and transformative” move, has drawn sharp criticism from civic groups for promoting car-centric infrastructure over sustainable mobility. The government insists the project will undergo technical review and public consultation.
“This isn’t about political credit—it’s about Brand Bengaluru,” a party statement said, calling for collaboration between state and central agencies.
As the debate intensifies, one thing is clear: Bengaluru’s citizens are calling for cleaner, more efficient, and inclusive transport solutions.
