Bengaluru: The Karnataka cabinet is expected to grant in-principle approval on Thursday for a proposed nuclear power plant in the state, even as local resistance mounts in areas identified for the project.

Sources indicate that the cabinet may authorize the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) to conduct preliminary feasibility studies in districts such as Koppal, Vijayapura, Raichur, and others being considered for the facility.

The move aligns with the Union government’s renewed focus on nuclear energy, as outlined in the current Union Budget. As part of India’s long-term energy transition strategy, the Centre aims to achieve 100 gigawatts of nuclear power capacity by 2047, significantly reducing the country’s dependence on fossil fuels.

In addition to the energy agenda, the cabinet is expected to review the findings of a report submitted by Justice John Michael D’Cunha on the tragic stampede during the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) victory celebration near Chinnaswamy Stadium on June 4, which resulted in 11 fatalities.

Another key item on the agenda is the proposed withdrawal of a notification to acquire 1,777 acres near Devanahalli for a defence and aerospace park. The potential rollback has reportedly spurred efforts by the Andhra Pradesh government to attract the interest of industrialists—a development that is also likely to be discussed during the meeting.
