BENGALURU — July 15, 2025 — In a significant victory for local farmers, the Karnataka government has formally abandoned its plan to acquire approximately 1,777 acres in Devanahalli taluk for a proposed aerospace and defence park near Kempegowda International Airport. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the decision after meeting with farmer representatives at Vidhana Soudha, marking a resolution to an unprecedented 1,198-day protest .

The government’s announcement ensures that farmland in Channarayapatna and adjacent Devanahalli villages will remain untouched—unless owners volunteer to sell their land. Those who opt-in will receive enhanced compensation and plots of developed land .

“We have completely shelved the land acquisition process. However, some farmers have voluntarily come forward… they will be offered higher compensation and developed plots.” — CM Siddaramaiah

The protest, widely regarded as one of Karnataka’s longest over land acquisition, drew strong support from local activists, including film star Prakash Raj, who praised the government’s action as a “walk the talk” moment .

What Changed?
• In late June, Agriculture Minister MB Patil revealed the government would exclude nearly 495 acres from the plan as a response to growing farmer dissent .
• The July 15 meeting resulted in the complete cancellation of the acquisition; only voluntarily sold land will now be considered for the project ().

Government’s Next Move

The state maintains that the withdrawal applies only to this region; land acquisition may still continue elsewhere for industrial development . However, officials indicated that farmers who are reluctant to sell may continue their agricultural activities unhindered.

Reaction & Implications
• Farmers are celebrating a long-awaited victory that preserves their livelihoods and ancestral land.
• Prakash Raj called it a vindication of grassroots advocacy: “Farmers will not give an inch… it is unfortunate. If the project moves ahead, he alone will be responsible for the fallout.”
• With higher compensation and developed plots proposed, the government hopes to pacify remaining landowners .

What Lies Ahead

While the aerospace and defence park vision near the airport remains afloat, its scope and feasibility may shift dramatically. The government will invite willing sellers at revised rates, delaying the project’s trajectory. Meanwhile, the Devanahalli region—home to Foxconn, Boeing, and Amazon’s upcoming hubs—continues to draw industrial interest .

Summary Snapshot:

Key Developments Details
Land Acquisition Shelved entirely in face of farmer protest
Voluntary Sales Allowed, with improved compensation
Farmers’ Response Widespread protest ended peacefully
Project Outlook Aerospace park still possible, but scope reduced
Next Steps Government appoints buyer terms and waits for willing sellers
