Bengaluru: The city is expected to experience widespread disruptions on Tuesday, July 9, as trade unions across the country participate in a Bharat Bandh protesting the central government’s labour and economic policies. The strike, backed by more than 250 million workers from key sectors, is likely to impact banking, public transport, postal services, and power supply in Karnataka’s capital.

The nationwide protest has been called by ten central trade unions, targeting what they describe as the Centre’s “anti-labour” and “pro-corporate” stance. Major sectors joining the bandh include banking, insurance, transport, coal, and postal services.

Banking, Insurance Services to See Major Disruption

The All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) and the Bengal Provincial Bank Employees Association have confirmed their participation, which means services such as cheque clearance, account transactions, and loan processing could be suspended for the day. Insurance offices are also expected to operate with reduced staff, affecting claims and customer service operations.

Transport Impact: BMTC, KSRTC on Alert

While BMTC and KSRTC have not officially declared service suspensions, disruptions in bus schedules and frequencies are anticipated. Routes may be affected by rallies or if employees choose to participate in the strike. Commuters are advised to check real-time updates before heading out.

Government, Postal Services, and Education

Postal services may slow down due to employee participation in the strike. Although government offices are expected to remain open, operations could be hampered by staff shortages.

Private Sector and Tech Hubs Monitoring Situation

Bengaluru’s major IT corridors—including Whitefield, Electronic City, and Hebbal—are closely watching the situation. Reasons Behind the Bandh

The protest revolves around a 17-point charter of demands submitted to Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. Key demands include:

• Reduction in service charges for essential services.

Union leaders also criticised the government for not holding the annual Indian Labour Conference for a decade, alleging a shift away from the welfare model toward corporate interests.
