The gold smuggling case involving Kannada actress Ranya Rao is no longer just a headline, it’s a whirlpool, dragging in more people by the day. What started as a high-profile arrest has now dragged a constable into its depths.

In a latest revelation, Constable Basavaraj has revealed Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP) Ramachandra Rao, Ranya’s stepfather, had personally instructed him to provide protocol assistance to her at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport.

Just days ago, DGP Rao had washed his hands off the matter, denying any involvement. But Basavaraj’s statement throws in a fresh twist into an already murky investigation.

He told investigators that Ranya had called him at 6:20 PM on the day of her arrival from Dubai, asking for protocol assistance. Following orders, he helped her through the airport, completely unaware that moments later, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) would swoop in and take her into custody.

Basavaraj denied any knowledge of the smuggling activities, insisting that he was merely following orders and had provided similar protocol assistance to Ranya three to four times before.
But with investigators now uncovering how she managed to breeze through immigration and the Green Channel under official protection, serious questions are being raised about just how deep this network runs.

With the Karnataka government ordering an inquiry, the case is no longer just about Ranya. It’s about how state resources might have been misused, and who else is caught in this swirling mess. It’s about the system that may have enabled it all.

As more names emerge, it seems this scandal will not stop at few but is bound to bring in more names in the fore.
